SAYING NO TO SUGAR AND YEST TO FLEXIBILITY

Find your balance.....soothe your  mind, and re-energize your spirit

So, unless we are consuming fruit, let's make a conscious effort not to consume any sugar, sweet drinks, or sweet snacks again this week. It will take a few days to get started, let's give ourselves a little help, but when it comes to yoga, Diet is very much an important part of our yoga practice.

Let's replace those sweet drinks with water. Eliminating sugar is going to be our best reward, because sugar increases inflammation in the body. However, don't be too hard on yourself. At the end of the week, let's not put ourselves into any stress, if you want that sweet "what-ever-it-is,  just don't over do it.

The Wisdom of Breathing

Breathing techniques can reduce tension in the body and increase our focus.

It’s important to focus on and incorporate an awareness of your breathing in your yoga practice.  Once you master the awareness of your breathing, you can take your breathing exercises off the mat, and that is where the real healing power of yoga kicks in, in everyday life and living. There have been several studies to show that practicing yoga can help improve breathing.  Improving your breathing can help build endurance and keep your lungs and heart healthy.

Rev. Burriss invites students to combine breath and movement to experience a peaceful and transformative Serenity Yoga practice.

SPIRITUAL WELL-BEING

By Rev. Denise Burriss

Spirituality can be defined as an emotion, or a feeling, that affects your behavior allowing you to discover the essence of your being and the deepest values by which we live.

It encompasses our belief in the one true God and helps us to connect through prayer and meditation, where we ultimately receive God's wisdom and understanding.  So how do we achieve spiritual well-being?

YOGA: A LIFE-LONG LEARNING EXPERIENCE

By Rev. Denise Burriss

Yoga Had me at Hello. In the height of summer, with the sounds of rush hour traffic, we were instructed on how to bring our focus and attention to our center, and when we do that, we'll hear the birds in the trees, just outside the window, and yes, I eventually heard the birds chirping.  From that moment, I was hooked on yoga.

My Health and Wellness Journey and Why I'm Inspired to Host The Serenity Wellness Luncheon

Years ago, I learned from medical professionals, that when the body endures an injury, they refer to the injury as an "insult" to the body. I also learned that the body has an amazing ability to heal itself and through that, I was reminded at how wonderfully and magnificently we are made. Perfect in God's image, and perfect because He created us. Over the years, there has been an enormously increase in

A Walk In the Park, Just Because

By Rev. Denise Burriss

Fall 2019

One day, in November I stopped at Dunbarton Oaks, just because, and I spent a few minutes walking through one of my favorite gardens in Georgetown, on my way to my water walking.

Feeling blessed and very contemplative with where I am in this space and time. Spending so many fun times in high school, hanging out in Georgetown was just "exlporatoraly" fun. That's a new word.
