Rosa Parks Practicicing Yoga in Chicago, Illinois, Circa, 1973

Yoga is an ancient practice dating back 5,000 years. In "our Pyramids" in Egypt you will find hierogliphics of yoga poses and the evidence that the Egyptians understood and practiced Mindfulness, Meditation, and Yoga to obtain and maintain  Health and Wellness, Mind, Body, and Spirit. The history of yoga is recorded from the Ancients of India.

For many young people, Alice Coltrane is an unfamiliar name.

Those who have heard of her know her as the wife of iconic saxophonist John Coltrane. She is also known as Turiyasanagitanade.

Although she was a gifted multi-instrumentalist (she played piano, organ and harp), she’s one of only handful of women who made her name playing—not singing—in the male-dominated jazz milieu in the 50s and early 60s.

Alice Coltrain's star might have faded after her husband, Jazz saxophonist passed away in 1967. Instead, she kindled another kind of light and created

a path for herself as a leader in the yoga community.

Swami Turiyasanagitandae became the first female Swami in India and in 1983 she foundedd the Satchidanandai Anantam Ashram in Agoura Hills, California, a spiritual center in the Santa Monica Mountains.

When he wasn't producing arguably the greatest album of all time,

Quincy Jones was a dedicated devotee of the Bikram system of Yoga for 15 years. He's even quoted as saying that Yoga was the most important thing in his life at one point. Though you can't really tell from how he speaks, Quincy Jones suffered from not one but two brain aneurysms in 1974 and the doctors thought he would almost certainly die soon because of them. In fact, he only had a 1 in 100 chance of surviving the surgeries needed to repair the aneurysms. Miraculously, Jones did survive and said that his brush with death changed his outlook on life.

In 1976, Quincy Jones is quoted as saying

“I haven’t turned mean or anything like that, but I don’t ever again intend to hold all my feelings inside and refuse to get things out in the open. There’s going to be no more pretending about anything.”

When God breathed into us, we became living souls. Healing begins with the Breath of Life and the path to finding inner peace and joy through mindful movement begins first with recognizing that we are spiritual beings.  Meditative breathing becomes a way of life and it all begins with prayer.

Breath and movement connects us to nourishing other areas of our lives, including our relationships, our spirituality, and the world around us.  Let's journey with inner peace, joy, and Serenity together.
