About Rev. Denise Burriss

Rev. Denise has been practicing yoga since she was 19 years old and began professionally teaching Serenity Yoga in 1990, when she was Ordained an Itinerate Minister in the AME Church.
Rev. Denise is the owner and founder of Serenity With Denise Yoga with a foundational theme, “Health and Wellness, for Your Mind, Body, and Spirit”. She is renowned for her depth of study and her ability to present the complexities of ancient wisdom in a practical life-affirming manner, as well as her unique style of teaching with love, humor, and grace. She is also the Vice President of Earth's Natural Force Connections, ENF Rangers, a 501(c)(3) multicultural children's environmental organization, with a mission "to teach children to respect themselves, their community, and the Earth".
Rev. Denise's signature yoga teaching style, known as Serenity Yoga, incorporates Anatomy-Based, restorative yoga, with, breath, holistic body awareness, and structural methods of discovering and re-discovering love, joy, inner peace, and serenity. Her classes are taught from the heart, honoring the teachings that have and are still being passed down to her by her teachers,
A native Washingtonian, Rev. Denise holds a BA Degree in Psychology from the University of the District of Columbia, where she graduated Cum Laude. An Experienced, Registered Yoga Teacher, E-RYT and Wellness Educator with Yoga Alliance, Rev. Denise’s 30 years of teaching yoga are also influenced by her years of studying Anatomy, Nutrition, and Spiritual Well-Being, under the tutelage of her father, Dr. David Harris, who taught medical students at the Howard University School of Medicine, when it was formerly known as Freedman’s Hospital.
Rev. Denise brings to the mat the wisdom of many globally known, inspired teachers, and decades long, traditional yoga teachings from the Himalayan lineage of the master guru and wisdom of B.K.S. Iyengar. Denise is currently studying Anatomy Based Yoga and Wellness with YogaU Online, with Eva Norlyk Smith, Lynn Crimmando, and Julie Gudmestad, from Paxton Yoga, and will receive the Yoga E-RYT-500 Certification from Yoga Alliance in September 2021.

Rev. Denise invites students to combine breath and movement to experience inner peace and mindful relaxation, in their yoga practice, on and off the mat.
Our path to well-being is a journey of positive thoughts, eating well, and caring for our body.
Yoga is the union between body, mind and spirit and it encourages overall health and wellness. The hope is that students leave class feeling differently than when they walked in- physically, mentally or spiritually.
